How to Apply

Applications onto our teacher training course are made via DfE Apply. You can search for available courses by visiting ‘DfE find’.

Qualifications Needed

To qualify for this Primary route into teacher training you must have a degree. You must also have at least a grade C or grade 4 in GCSE English, mathematics and science. If you don’t have these GCSE grades, you may still be eligible for the course by taking an equivalency test. For more information please contact us.

We would also recommend that you have some recent primary school experience so you can reflect on this within your statement, however this isn’t essential.

Application tips

You can apply for up to 3 places initially
Providers then have 40 days to interview and respond
You have 10 days from the response of your last offer to choose your provider
If you do not secure a place, you can apply for other providers one at a time in ‘Apply again’

References

You will need two references to support your application, please try to ensure that these are from a professional within your university, a school you have volunteered/ are working in or your current/recent employer. Please ensure you use a professional email address and not a personal email address for these references.

If you have gained work experience in a school. We strongly recommend that you gain a reference from someone who works in the school (class teacher or Head teacher). Sometimes getting your references can stall your application, so be prepared and make sure that the people you add as referee’s are aware of the urgency of your application.

Interviews

Applications will be screened and suitable candidates will be shortlisted to attend an interview, usually in their local area. If selected for interview, we will provide you with full information regarding the interview process, so you feel confident and well informed to attend. All interviews will be held in a school and you will be expected to teach children as part of the interview process.

You will be interviewed by a panel (usually a panel of 2) which consists of head teachers of schools in your local area or senior leaders from the schools and may include the Head of SCITT too.

The availability of school places in the trainee’s local area will be discussed following the interview process and trainees will then visit recommended schools, so they can choose which school suits them the best and the schools can select a trainee that matches their needs.
