My journey to teacher training

"Fellow colleagues had also previously studied with EOE and I knew the high caliber of teaching that they fostered. I have seen firsthand, the students that have blossomed and grew with the support of EOE and wanted to be part of a small and nurturing team that would help me reach my goal."

So, this is my third attempt at becoming a primary school teacher and as they say 3rd time lucky, right? Previously life just took over: 3 years of backpacking round the world, becoming a mum to 3 very spirited children and taking on many menial but necessary jobs, I now set out to achieve my life-time career goal to be a teacher.

I always knew I would get to this point, but as a mature student and a busy mum, I knew finding the right route and provider was so important. Recently, I have had an amazing opportunity to work as a teacher assistant and through this role I was able to stay at this school for my placement as a trainee teacher. Fellow colleagues had also previously studied with EOE and I knew the high caliber of teaching that they fostered. I have seen firsthand, the students that have blossomed and grew with the support of EOE and wanted to be part of a small and nurturing team that would help me reach my goal.

So now is my chance. From the beginning, when I had my interview, I was made to feel welcome and valued. They could see my enthusiasm and gave me personal targets that I could start to work on. I did my degree with the Open University, so it was amazing to have the opportunity to meet with fellow trainee teachers and to feel part of a team, rather than working at home on my own. I have made lots of new friends and a network of support to get through this difficult year.

The first term was vital in supporting my transition from a TA, to a trainee teacher. Every training session equipped me with exciting and new ideas and skills; every week I felt engaged with the training and motivated to try something new in the classroom. I love how we received training from lots of amazing specialists and I leave training on a Friday excited and empowered to get into the classroom on a Monday to put my new ideas into practice.

Now, I am not a technical wizard, but I love how everything is at my fingertips. The online portal is very easy to use, and I appreciate how much is there to support me and keep me organised. The resources that are available are fantastic. I often sit down for an hour to do some work, but end up down a rabbit hole till late at night, reading lots of interesting articles and blogs that have been posted on the portal that are related to that week’s training. I have experienced other University based training providers and I have never had such a bespoke bank of resources as this.

All this support enables me to be a confident and fully equipped trainee. I also know that the staff at EOE know me as an individual because the cohort is small and this is invaluable; they are approachable and understand when personal circumstances might occur.

The SCITT route is very special and I can’t recommend it enough. My mentor is so important and shares all her experiences and knowledge to support my journey. I feel valued and part of the school team but also comfortable to try new things and step outside my comfort zone!

The biggest motivation is working with my class and the children see me as a teacher. It is great to already have an impact on children’s education. I believe the best way to learn is in the classroom and everyday is different and exciting! Everybody is supportive and willing you to be the best teacher that you can be. I just love every day, although it can be tough, but the rewards are worth it.

For too long, I have done menial and boring jobs and now I have finally found my calling. There are long days, lots of laughs and many new challenges to overcome but I know I will succeed with EOE.
